Etymology of Coffee
The coffee company Bunn, is very famous in the US for making outstanding coffee makers, but what most people do not probably know about this company, is where they came up with the name “Bunn”.
The word “coffee” originally appeared in the English language in the 14th century with the word “chaoua”. This word seems to have come from the Italian word “caffĂ©”, which came from the Ottoman Turkish word “Kahve”. The Ottoman Turkish word in turn most likely comes from the Arabic word “qahwah”, and it is there that most etymologies end.
Arabians, put forward that this word comes from the Arabic word “qahiya”, which means to have no appetite. As it was commonly believed that drinking coffee would stop you from wanting to eat. It is plausible however that the word originally comes from Ethiopia, as coffee is indigenous to the “Kaffa” highland in the southwest of the country.
This however is speculation, as the word for the coffee plant and berry in the area is in fact “Bunn”.
